For over two years, rumors have repeatedly popped up about the South Korean video game developer and publisher NCSoft developing a Horizon MMO spinoff with collaboration from franchise creator Guerrilla Games.
Those rumors were seemingly confirmed when, at Korea’s premiere game conference G-Star 2025, NCSoft and Guerrilla officially revealed the MMORPG Horizon Steel Frontiers as the next entry in the ever-expanding Horizon series.
It’s currently unknown when Steel Frontiers will launch, as gameplay footage shown during the reveal was only in its pre-alpha stage, but Guerrilla’s Studio Director Jan-Bart van Beek has confirmed that NCSoft built Steel Frontiers specifically for mobile IOS and Android devices.
Despite the mobile platform intentions, NCSoft will make Steel Frontiers available for PC platforms that utilize their PURPLE gaming software platform, with surprisingly no plans or hints towards bringing the next Horizon title to the PlayStation 5.
Horizon Steel Frontiers Explained
Much like the mainline Horizon games, Steel Frontiers‘ gameplay is primarily centered around third-person combat and traversal, with players being able to override most machines, including ones never before rideable, such as the Stalkers and Glinthawks.
Traversal overall has been expanded upon, with the Pullcaster now being able to swing players from specific launch points, allowing them to travel akin to Marvel’s Spider-Man, as well as being able to pull players onto hostile machines after destroying specific parts.
Horizon Steel Frontiers marks the second time a Horizon game has been made where its protagonist Aloy is not playable, following Horizon Call of the Mountain. Instead, players will be able to create and customize their own original character from either the Nora, Tenakth, Utaru, or Oseram tribes.
The exact story and place of Steel Frontiers on the Horizon timeline is currently unknown, but players will be able to explore an entirely new region in the game called the Deadlands, found in present-day Arizona and New Mexico.
It’s currently unknown why Steel Frontiers is being developed only for mobile and PURPLE PC platforms, but it could be due to Guerrilla and Sony striving to avoid competition from their own upcoming story-focused Horizon multiplayer title.
In a way, Steel Frontiers may function similarly to NetEase Games’ Destiny: Rising, with the MMO potentially attracting new mobile-oriented fans to the series worldwide while the mainline games continue to be launched exclusively on Sony’s consoles.
