How to Solve the Wall Puzzle in Where Winds Meet

There are plenty of side missions in Where Winds Meet, and that is part of what makes it a great contender against games like Ghost of Yotei. If you have done some exploring in the early game, you might have come across a side mission called Echoes of Old Battles.

This side mission will take you deep inside an old fort, where you must solve puzzles and face fierce foes to continue. One such puzzle that you will have to solve is the wall puzzle.

Let’s break down the steps required to reach and solve the wall puzzle in Where Winds Meet.

Where Winds Meet Echoes of Old Battles Quest Walkthrough

On the eastern side of the Verdant Wilds region of Where Winds Meet, you will find an old fort. Here, you will see someone outside the main gate. They will give you the quest called Echoes of Old Battles.

Once you receive the mission, you will be tasked with opening the main gate and entering the fort ruins. Inside, you will be tasked with defeating the guards and the boss of the area, Zhang Bao.

Opening the Pathway to the Tunnels

Where Winds Meet Wall Puzzle Torches being Lit

With the enemies defeated, you will be required to light specific torches around the area to open up the pathway that leads into the tunnel beneath the ruins. The torches that are required to be lit are the following:

The torch in the training grounds, where you fought the boss.
The torch above the large red gate opposite the main gate you entered from.
The torch on the southwest tower.
The torch on the northwest tower, by the main gate.

Where Winds Meet Wall Puzzle Torches Hint

With all the correct torches lit, you will get a cutscene where a circular slab rises out of the training grounds. Run over to this slab and perform a slam on it. Once this is done, the stairs will open up, leading down to the tunnels.

Solving the Wall Puzzle

Where Winds Meet Wall Puzzle Gesture Unlock

Descend the stairs and follow the pathway until you come across a corpse. Investigate the corpse to receive the Yanyun Oath Gesture. This will be required to solve the wall puzzle.

Continue through the tunnel until you reach a room with a large statue in the center and various symbols on the walls. Walk up to the statue and interact with it to perform the Yanyun Oath Gesture, activating the wall puzzle.

With the puzzle activated, you will see various characters on the left and right walls lit up. These characters can be pushed into the wall and pulled out. To solve the puzzle, you must have the correct characters illuminated on both walls.

Follow the images above to know which Chinese characters are required to be illuminated to solve the puzzle. With the correct characters illuminated, the puzzle will be solved, and you will get a cutscene showing the door opening.

Unlocking the Water Wheel Gate

Where Winds Meet Wall Puzzle Waterfall Contraption

In the final puzzle room of the tunnel, you will find a water wheel that isn’t spinning. To unlock the final door, you will need to get the water wheel spinning again.

To do this, go through the waterfall, and you will find a contraption that you can interact with. Interact with the contraption to get the water wheel spinning. This will open the door for you to progress.

Go through the door, and it will lead you to the treasure room. Interact with the large chest to obtain the treasure and complete the quest. The treasure you will obtain is the skill called Touch of Death — a powerful early-game skill.
