Let’s face it; payroll isn’t the most glamorous part of running a business, but it’s one of the most consequential. A simple payroll error can lead to a trust problem that’s very hard to walk back.

How did I find and evaluate the best payroll software?

To start, I reviewed the latest G2’s Grid® Report, which included 40+ tools, and narrowed it down to 7. I mostly narrowed down the best options based on features, ease of use, pricing, real user feedback, and prioritized tools ranked higher on the proprietary G2 score.

To go deeper, I used AI-driven research to analyze G2 product reviews, uncovering real-time buyer sentiment, user emotions, and recurring themes in payroll software adoption. I also collaborated with our in-house market research experts to assess pros and cons, review quality, and customer segment scores, ensuring a well-rounded perspective.

What I look for in the best payroll software: My honest take

Regardless of whether you need one or several payroll tools, here are the core features I evaluated.
