One Piece anime remake from Netflix and WIT Studio gets first trailer

The Straw Hat Pirates’ blitz continues. On Wednesday, Netflix finally released the first teaser for WIT Studio’s upcoming anime remake of One Piece, titled The One Piece, showcasing a new take on the beloved manga and anime series.

The minute-long trailer for The One Piece shows the early days of this adventure, including Gol D. Roger’s legendary final speech.

The One Piece is set for February 2027 and will consist of seven 42-ish-minute episodes. It will adapt the first 50 chapters of the manga, which will take the story partway through the Baratie arc (for series veterans, this is where they meet Sanji).

Those who haven’t been following the minutiae of One Piece may be thinking, “Wait, doesn’t One Piece already have an anime?” It does; 1,167 episodes, in fact. However, many fans are excited about the new take on the series because Toei Animation’s existing One Piece anime made many trade-offs to release episodes weekly for two decades.

Because the show had a new episode every week, it had to take non-canonical detours to avoid catching up to the source material, which was created at a slower pace because most manga are drawn by smaller teams. The TV series’ strict schedule also didn’t leave much space for the type of flashy animation many action fans have come to expect from battle shonen adaptations.

Beyond the less stringent deadlines, many expect the upcoming series to have much smoother animation because the team handling the remake, WIT Studio, is known for some of the most visually impressive anime in recent memory: it handled the first few seasons of Attack on Titan, Ranking of Kings, Spy x Family, Vinland Saga, and many others. The show will be directed by Masashi Koizuka (Attack on Titan, Moonrise), with Taku Kishimoto handling series composition (Fruits Basket, Gintama, Haikyuu!!).

Netflix has gone all in on One Piece in recent years. Beyond the anime remake, the streamer also produces the surprisingly delightful live-action take on the series, which has currently adapted up to chapter 154 of the source material’s 1,185 chapters. The show’s third season is set to stream in 2027.

All of this news comes as the manga’s storied series prepares to end, and while no one knows exactly how many chapters are left, series author Eiichiro Oda has confirmed the series is in its final phase. Another big change is that Toei’s long-running anime adaptation has slowed production, capping output at 26 episodes per year as of 2026. Thankfully, Netflix seems to be picking up some of the “slack.”
