When it comes to the most iconic figures in video game history, very few characters hold as much weight as Donkey Kong. Back in 1981, the original arcade cabinet captured the industry’s attention, and it was a certain mustache-twirling hero and a giant, barrel-tossing gorilla that caused these machines to kickstart a literal revolution in the entertainment world.
Now, more than four decades after that historic debut, there is another major trend that has been sparking some serious conversation among gaming enthusiasts lately: the ongoing, star-studded partnership between Nintendo and LEGO.
We already got some incredibly nostalgic sets based on The Legend of Zelda franchise alongside another huge lineup of Pokémon, resulting in brick-built collaborations that have been goldmines for collectors – and a total nightmare for our wallets, of course.
And if the latest internet whispers are anything to go by, our gaming shelves are about to get a whole lot heavier (and our pockets a lot lighter) with a brilliant double dose of nostalgia that brings us all back to that barrel-tossing gorilla from the 1980s.
Recreating the Quarter-Eating Classic
You might recall that an official LEGO Donkey Kong set was briefly teased by Nintendo and LEGO back in May. However, at the time, we didn’t really have any solid details to go off of other than a vague logo animation and a wave of speculation.
However, the typical internet pipeline has just done what it usually does with upcoming LEGO sets: a new batch of leaks has hit social media, providing our very first detailed look at exactly what both companies have been cooking up behind closed doors.
Instead of a standard playset designed for younger audiences, this project looks to be a stunningly faithful, collector-oriented recreation of the classic 1981 arcade cabinet experience. And the leaked images reveal a beautifully detailed, miniature cabinet complete with authentic retro decals, a blocky joystick, arcade buttons, and a brick-built screen that vividly depicts a classic level from the iconic game (with those famous crooked girders and ladders!). Here, take a look by yourself:
Despite looking sharp, it is not confirmed if it will be playable or movable somehow. Some players (and I, by the way) believe that it looks like the background elements will move, featuring a hand-cranked mechanical moving screen like the NES set, but that’s just speculation that we are hoping to be true.

Besides, according to the latest insider rumors (thanks, Nintendo Everything), the LEGO Donkey Kong Arcade Set is slated to release much sooner than expected, targeting an August 2026 launch window. The display model will reportedly include a hefty 1,367 pieces and carry a suggested retail price of $200 – that’s $100 less than the Great Deku Tree set and the recent Iconic Trainer Moments Poké Ball set, which are the most expensive video game LEGOs to date.
While a formal reveal from Nintendo is expected to follow shortly, the leaked specifications suggest this will be a must-have centerpiece for retro gaming rooms. Not sure about you, but I’m already thinking about how to make some room on my top shelf before August rolls around! Building a replica of the exact game that put Nintendo on the global map and was literally a benchmark for video game history simply sounds like a great weekend project. Either way, the countdown to the official announcement has begun, proving that retro gaming preservation looks just as good in plastic bricks as it does on a vintage CRT monitor.
