In the wake of Xbox’s huge reset, Compulsion Games has returned to independence for the first time since Microsoft acquired the studio in 2018. It appears the team’s first order of business is finding new projects and partners.
Posting on LinkedIn, Compulsion said it is “expanding opportunities to collaborate with studios across the games and entertainment industry.”
“We invite partners to leverage the talent and creativity of the award-winning team behind South of Midnight,” the studio added.
To me, the clearest reading is that Compulsion is announcing that it is open for business and looking for contract work. That could include co-development, outsourced production, support work, art and animation, technical assistance, pre-production, or potentially helping an entertainment company adapt one of its properties into a game.
However, there is another possible interpretation, and one that several people raised in the LinkedIn comments: Compulsion may be looking for something more collaborative than straightforward work-for-hire.

Perhaps the studio’s wording is more transparent than it initially appears, and it genuinely wants to find other teams willing to share development responsibilities. That could be an excellent path forward for Compulsion, which has demonstrated plenty of creative talent but has struggled to turn that into major commercial success.
South of Midnight was a beautiful game, bolstered by amazing music and strong acting. But the gameplay was lacking, and it just didn’t manage to bring in a big paying audience.

A killer bowl of southern gumbo needs to look good and taste amazing. South of Midnight, gothic fairytale inspired by the folklore of the deep south, is a feast for the eyes and ears. A fun yarn filled with good characters and stunning music. But the flavour? The Gameplay? It ain’t there.
Working alongside other developers could help reduce financial risk while allowing Compulsion to lean into its strengths and offset some of its weaknesses. Equally, taking on more conventional contract work could provide a dependable source of revenue while the newly independent studio develops its own future projects.
Either way, the underlying message seems fairly clear: Compulsion Games is independent again, and it wants the rest of the industry to know that its doors are open.
