Nintendo Switch 2 Is Still Outpacing The Original Switch By Millions

Nintendo has posted its latest quarterly financial results–ranging from April 1 to June 30–and while the Switch 2 continues to be the company’s fastest-selling system, sales have dropped considerably in the last three months. Overall, Nintendo’s operating profit increased 150.5% thanks to higher software revenue and $300 million in US tariff refunds that won’t be passed on to consumers.

A total of 3.82 million Switch 2 consoles were sold during this period, a steep drop compared to the same period last year when Nintendo sold 5.82 million units during the June 2025 launch. That figure is understandable, as the Switch 2 arrived with plenty of hype and demand behind it, fueling sales at the time and setting several new records for Nintendo.

The Switch 2 is doing some big numbers.

With the new quarterly sales numbers, 23.68 million Switch 2 consoles have been sold in its first 13 months on the market. In comparison, the original Switch sold 17.79 million units during the same period, while the Wii console reached over 20 million units sold.

Nintendo is estimating that it will sell another 12.68 million Switch 2 consoles over the next three quarters, which will work out to 16.5 million Switch 2 sales during its current financial year and 36.35 million lifetime sales if it reaches that target.

On the software side, sales rose year-over-year as Nintendo released more titles and its playerbase steadily increased. Mario Kart World has now sold 15.39 million units to date, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream reached 7.96 million copies in its first three months on sale, Kirby Air Riders has reached 1.9 million sales, and the Switch 2 edition of Super Mario Party Jamboree is sitting on 1.15 million units sold so far. As for recent releases, exact numbers for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book and Star Fox haven’t been shared yet, but Nintendo says that the two games continue to perform within expectations.

Tomodachi Life has been a big hit this year.

Switch 1 games are also performing well, as another 450,000 units of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe were sold during the last quarter, increasing its lifetime sales to 71.53 million. Nintendo added that Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have both sold 380,000 units each, further increasing their impressive lifetime sales numbers.

Amidst all the talk of a digital-only future for games at companies like Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo also briefly spoke about the gap between digital and physical. Digital sales rose to 61.5%, an increase of around 2%. Looking ahead, several big Switch 2 games are still on the way in 2026, including Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave (September 17), Switch Sports Resort (October 22), and the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake that is scheduled to launch before the end of 2026.
