The physical versions of Marvel’s Wolverine were revealed to have oversold the game’s digital copies in Europe, with a 51% split. The news comes a few months after Sony’s controversial choice to stop the production of physical games in early 2028.
The report, made by The Game Business and based on data provided by Ampere, also revealed that 35% of all worldwide copies sold for Wolverine during its release month were physical. Its 2.16 million sales then placed it as the second-highest-selling September 2026 PlayStation 5 title, only trailing behind EA Sports FC 27’s 4.96 million. NBA 2K27, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and The Blood of Dawnwalker then closed the top five, with the latter two also attributing 30% and 36% of their PS5 totals to the physical market.
The members also saw the game top many other high-profile 2026 releases, such as Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, in less than a month, with Arc System Works’ fighting game still battling it to find its place within the niche. Here’s an overview of the best-selling PS5 games for September 2026, as revealed by Ampere via The Game Business:
- EA Sports FC 27 (4.96M Sales / 7% Physical)
- Marvel’s Wolverine (2.16M Sales / 35% Physical)
- NBA 2K27 (758K Sales / 8.2% Physical)
- Onimusha: Way of the Sword (724K / 30% Physical)
- The Blood of Dawnwalker (676K / 36% Physical)
- Halloween: The Game (672K / Digital Only)
- Control: Resonant (305K / 0% Physical)
- Silent Hill: Townfall (291K / 45.4% Physical)
- Minecraft (279K / 2.5% Physical)
- Grand Theft Auto 5 (242K / 12.3% Physical)
The Numbers Don’t Lie, Bub
Heavily criticized on social media upon release, it is undeniable that Marvel’s Wolverine was a hit among its target audience, with the numbers above representing a big jump from the title’s release week sales. Revealed by Alinea Analytics on September 18, the game had sold around 1.9 million copies, with 1 million being the result of digital pre-orders.
35% of Marvel’s Wolverine’s worldwide sales can be attributed to the physical market.
The increase can be attributed to both the gradual growth signature of the Marvel IP and to the efforts made by its development team to address some of the game’s biggest criticisms via gradual updates. The last, released on October 6, 2026, paired bug fixes with the ability to toggle its infamous scent trails.
Can Wolverine Be Considered a Success?
Although the above is great news for both Marvel and video-game fans hoping to see the X-Men get their turn, the question of whether Marvel’s Wolverine will be labeled a success or not will rely on one metric, and one metric only: its budget. After all, it’s a tall ask to expect any superhero game to beat Insomniac’s own Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which, following the massive boost provided by the web crawler’s recent success in theaters, has reportedly broken the 18 million copies mark on all platforms.
Marvel’s Wolverine is currently rumored to have had a budget of around $300 million, which would make it Insomniac’s second-highest project to date and put it on par with the mentioned Spider-Man 2 if confirmed. For comparison’s sake, the studio’s latest linear adventure title, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, is estimated to have had a budget of around $81 million and has sold over 4 million copies since its release in June 2021. 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man is then rumored to have had a budget of under $100 million.
You can currently get your claws on Marvel’s Wolverine exclusively on PlayStation 5. No news regarding the game’s official release for other platforms has been revealed.
