Sarvam AI Tops ChatGPT and Gemini on Specialised OCR Benchmark
Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI has attracted national attention after its document-reading model reportedly outperformed systems from OpenAI and Google on a prominent optical character recognition benchmark.
Sarvam Vision achieved 84.3 percent on the English-only portion of olmOCR-Bench, according to benchmark results released by the company in February 2026. The reported comparison placed Google’s Gemini 3 Pro at 80.2 percent and OpenAI’s GPT-5-based ChatGPT system at 69.8 percent.
The three-billion-parameter vision-language model also reportedly scored 93.28 percent on OmniDocBench v1.5, which evaluates how accurately AI systems interpret complex documents containing text, tables, mathematical expressions and different page layouts.
Sarvam Vision was designed particularly for Indian documents. Its training reportedly included material covering India’s 22 scheduled languages, such as newspapers, books, financial records, government forms and historical manuscripts. This focus could make the system useful for digitising public records and processing documents containing regional scripts or combinations of Indian languages and English.
The achievement has been celebrated online as a proud moment for India’s growing artificial-intelligence industry. It suggests that a relatively young Indian company can compete with much larger global technology firms when developing specialised products for local requirements.
The stronger conclusion is that Sarvam Vision demonstrated leading performance in a specialised category where Indian-language documents have often been poorly served. Independent testing and real-world deployments will ultimately determine whether that advantage is maintained.
