Having just announced that it will no longer be developing new content for Destiny 2, there was at least some hope that this meant Bungie might be moving on to Destiny 3. Sadly, that doesn’t seem to be the case. In fact, Bungie is planning on laying off staff.
Jason Schreier has gone and done some journalism again, talking to people within Bungie.
According to Schreier, “The company doesn’t have a new project lined up for Destiny 2’s development team after the game comes to an end next month”. He specifically says that Bungie doesn’t plan on immediately jumping into developing Destiny 3.
Of course, this doesn’t mean they won’t start making it in the future, but for now, Destiny 3 is on the back burner.
Furthermore, layoffs are expected to hit the company. No estimated number of layoffs was given. Given the company’s recent failures, there is at least a little bit of me that is concerned Bungie could be decimated in the coming months and years unless they start turning things around.
Bungie’s staff are apparently looking to pitch the company’s next project, including more stuff within the Destiny universe, but nothing has been greenlit.
Schreier also points out that Bungie is headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, making it one of the most expensive studios to run within Sony’s portfolio. Like he says regarding new projects, “there’s no guarantee that any will move forward in a challenging market that has led companies like Sony to raise prices and cut costs”.
Right now, Marathon is Bungie’s major focus, but it hasn’t been going well. Sales and player numbers have not impressed so far, but Bungie is seemingly confident that the game can continue to grow and become a big success.
Confident or not, that didn’t stop Sony from recently putting another impairment charge on Bungie, this time for $565 million.
