After months of speculation and rumors circulating within the gaming community, Activision and Treyarch have finally broken their silence regarding the Black Ops series of the Call of Duty franchise – and it seems that it is finally time to start seeing Viktor Reznov in every corner again!
The developers just took to social media to drop a bombshell that has first-person shooter fans already ecstatic, officially locking in a project that many feared would never actually see the light of day: the iconic Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 are making their way to PlayStation 5 next month, after being trapped on the PlayStation 3 for years.
All Mainline Call Of Duty Games In Release Order
We’re going over every Call of Duty game in release order to review the history of the franchise.
The Complete Package is Coming Sooner Than You Think
The announcement has caught a lot of people off guard, not just because of the surprise ports, but also due to how the developers are handling the classic content.
Unlike what Activision did with the controversial release of the remaster version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 back in 2020 (which stripped away the online components to only deliver the solo story), it looks like Treyarch is actually listening to the fans this time around, since both games will arrive with their complete, original packages fully intact.
According to an official post from the Call of Duty account on X (formerly Twitter), players are getting the exact experiences they fell in love with over a decade ago.
“It’s official: the original Black Ops and Black Ops 2 are being ported to PlayStation in July, courtesy of our partners at Iron Galaxy,” reads the post, which ends by confirming that both will include all original modes: Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies.
To make this preservation effort happen, Activision has brought in the porting specialists at Iron Galaxy to helm the project. If that name sounds familiar, it is because they have a massive track record of bringing heavy-hitting titles to new platforms. They are the folks responsible for the Nintendo Switch port of Diablo III, the PC version of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, and the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy ports, for example! Knowing they are at the wheel gives us a lot of confidence that these classic titles will run beautifully.

Having all the original modes available, it means that, along with uncovering the narrative twists of Alex Mason’s journey in the story campaign, we are finally getting to jump back into classic multiplayer maps like Nuketown and Firing Range. Plus, let’s be honest, the real crown jewel for many of us is the return of the vintage cooperative Zombies mode, with legendary maps like Kino der Toten and Mob of the Dead.
However, even with all this hype, the developers are still keeping a few secrets close to their chest. As of the time of this publication, Activision has not yet disclosed how much these individual ports will cost, whether they will also feature a native PlayStation 4 version for last-gen players, or an exact launch date within the month of July.
It is worth remembering that Sony users have been locked out of playing both Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 since the PlayStation 3 era, which feels like it’s literally a whole pandemic and two World Cups away at this point. Meanwhile, our friends over on the Xbox ecosystem have been enjoying both games for years on Xbox Series X|S, thanks to Microsoft’s backward compatibility program. Thankfully, that generational gap for PlayStation owners is finally closing, right?
