Developer Aggro Crab is now best known for Peak, its wildly popular co-op game that took Steam by storm after it launched in June 2024. The studio had caught my attention long before that with its prior game, a delightful Soulslike called Another Crab’s Treasure.
Released on April 25, 2024, Another Crab’s Treasure is a Soulslike where you control a hermit crab on an adventure to get their shell back. While Aggro Crab has gone on to build a much more popular game, this game still holds a special place in my heart due to its distinct, approachable take on a genre I don’t usually enjoy.
Most Soulslikes are incredibly serious and difficult action games. Another Crab’s Treasure is different, as it injects a sense of humor, colorful world, and 3D platforming mechanics into the experience. I particularly enjoy the mechanic where players can pick up objects in the environment and equip them as a shell to receive additional abilities. This adds a layer of improvisation mid-battle as I constantly scout each level for new shells to use to turn the tide of battle in my favor.
There are still tough boss battles and an emphasis on dodging, parrying, and learning enemy attack patterns to succeed for those who like the edge that FromSoftware’s games have. I believe that many Soulslikes can’t reach their full potential because they are too afraid to deviate drastically from the formula that FromSoftware established. Another Crab’s Treasure shows you can still make a fantastic game by using the Souls foundation as a base upon which to build original ideas.
Another Crab’s Treasure features a lot of helpful accessibility options too, so it’s a great entry point into the genre and the Soulslike I’m most likely to return to if I’m not looking for the most intense challenge. My enjoyment of Another Crab’s Treasure has only increased over time, so it’s the game that I’ll always remember Aggro Crab for. Going forward, most will remember Aggro Crab because of Peak.
Although Another Crab’s Treasure was successful, the game’s three-year development cycle burned out Aggro Crab, and the studio still struggled to find funding for its next game. Peak was made in a much shorter timeframe in response, and is now by far the studio’s biggest hit and one of the quintessential games of 2025. If you only know Aggro Crab because of Peak’s gratifying indie success story, consider checking out what the studio made right before that massive hit.
