Onimusha: Way of the Sword will launch three weeks earlier than planned. Capcom’s new samurai slice-’em-up will now arrive on September 4, presumably as a way of getting itself clear of the inevitable Grand Theft Auto 6 blast radius.
Interestingly, this was actually predicted several weeks ago when retailer listings began pointing toward a September 4 release date. At the time, though, it looked like little more than a placeholder, a mistake, or one of those weird retail gremlins that occasionally pops up to make everyone briefly lose their minds. That was especially true because jus a week or two later, Capcom reaffirmed the game’s original September 25 date during a showcase, seemingly putting the whole thing to bed.
And yet, here we are. Just under a week after sticking to its guns, Capcom has apparently changed course completely and yanked Onimusha forward by three weeks.
The reason is obvious enough. With Grand Theft Auto 6 looming over the calendar like a planet-sized money vacuum, publishers are clearly trying to find whatever safe landing zones they can before Rockstar starts hoovering up attention, time and disposable income. The problem is that September is now starting to look less like a safe landing zone and more like a second battlefield.
Onimusha may have escaped GTA 6’s immediate blast radius, but it has still landed in an absolutely stacked month. The Blood of Dawnwalker is currently dated for September 3, Marvel’s Wolverine is due on September 15, while Silent Hill: Townfall and Remedy’s Control Resonant are both lined up for September 24. In other words, Capcom has moved Onimusha away from one monster, only to park it in the middle of several others.
Still, that might be the better option. Onimusha is a long-awaited revival of a beloved Capcom series, but even beloved Capcom revivals probably do not want to be standing anywhere near GTA 6 when it detonates. September might be crowded, but at this rate, it is also shaping up to be one of the most ridiculous months of the year for games, and a clear bank account decimator.
Capcom has also said the pre-order bonuses of a Lion Dog charm and a Sealed Curse sword appearance will now become early adopter bonuses. As long as you the game by 25th September, you’ll get the bonuses.
