Our Ancient Fear of Artificial Intelligence

📈 GO DEEPER
Free blog — analysis, updates, and the full back catalog:
The Signal Report — premium newsletter for serious investors. No hedging, no general-audience explainers:

For three thousand years we’ve told one story: a maker builds a mind, the mind turns on us. The AI apocalypse isn’t a forecast. It’s our oldest fear.

The story is always the same. A maker builds a mind to serve, the mind escapes its bounds, and the creation turns on the world. We’ve told it for as long as we could write, and probably much longer. Long before any machine existed, the bronze giant Talos circled the shores of Crete. A rabbi in Prague shaped a guardian from river clay and woke it with a single word. Mary Shelley assembled a mind from dead matter and called her novel a modern Prometheus. In 1920 a Czech play handed us the word robot, and by the final act its robots had wiped out humanity. Four costumes across four centuries, and underneath them the same story.

Not one of those centuries held a working machine, so the terror didn’t crawl out of a laboratory. We carried it in fully formed and draped it over the first device built to hold it. That’s the recognition this series is built on. The thinking machine is new, but the fear is ancient, older than writing itself, old enough the record can’t find where it begins. Valuations inflate and crack like every vessel before them. The fear is the one thing in three thousand years that has never deflated. Belief outlasts the bronze, and it’ll outlast the silicon.

So if the fear came from us and not the machine, the harder question is why us. We’re descended from the ancestors who heard a rustle in the grass and assumed a predator. The ones who assumed the wind became the predator’s lunch, and across enough generations only the hyper-vigilant survived. We’re built to detect minds, especially the ones that might want to hurt us, and we find them so eagerly we see them where nothing is there. There’s a more unsettling layer. What we fear the machine will do, seize power and treat people as raw material, we picture so vividly because we’ve watched ourselves do it. Carl Jung called it the shadow, and part of the monster on the screen is the reflection of the hand that made it.

Which brings us back to the companies. When a lab like Anthropic publishes a document warning that its own creation might slip past human control, then keeps building faster and raising record sums, the warning hasn’t slowed the work. It’s become part of the pitch. The terror is the asset, the most reliable thing these companies produce, and it converts into valuation better than any product. By the end of this series you’ll be able to watch the next AI doomsday headline and see how it was built and who it’s for, and know why another one is already on the way. It begins with a single word, coined in the 1950s to pull a trigger three thousand years old. That’s the next episode.
