The internet’s constant presence in our lives makes juggling passwords a necessary evil, and many games and apps take the load off by storing these login methods. While this can be incredibly convenient, it also means that if any breaches occur, players are left to the wolves.
It’s good practice to change your passwords on a regular basis, and Square Enix is asking Final Fantasy 14 players to do just that. In a blog post released just a few hours ago, the company revealed that a malicious third party has managed to breach player account information, and while they search for the culprits, all players are encouraged to reset their login credentials as soon as possible.
Hurting Players and Developers Both
Data breaches are nothing new to the world of gaming, though the actual form varies from breach to breach. Some of the biggest i n the industry target developers themselves, either for company information or personal data, enabling leaks or straight-up fraud if the companies have enough personal information on their staff.
The other kind, afflicting Final Fantasy 14 players as we speak, is a player-targeted attack meant to steal personal data, likely for scams or to test these passwords on other platforms. This is just another reason to not reuse the same password on multiple accounts, as a single leak can compromise you across the internet.
This isn’t the first account issue Final Fantasy 14 has had in the last year, with a mod back in 2025 revealing that Square tracks profiles between characters, allowing potential stalkers to follow victims through their alternates. This was quickly rectified after outrage, but sparked a discussion about how easy Square made it to keep an eye on other players’ accounts, minimizing privacy.
Larger industry sentiments on data breaches have shifted slightly due to the ever-present nature of leaks, especially surrounding hotly anticipated titles. Players as a whole have grown a bit more patient with the individuals who enact these leaks, with situations like this one providing an important reminder of how important account security is.
While this can be incredibly convenient, it also means that if any breaches occur, players are left to the wolves.
To that end, Square is attempting to stave off the effects of the data breach by locking the accounts of players they believe are affected. These accounts will have emails sent to their primary addresses, allowing them to reset their account info immediately. Meanwhile, Square encourages the use of One-Time Passwords, a system that sends players a unique code every time they log in.
This way, even with your info leaked, you can ensure no one can log in to your account without your input, and you’ll be alerted via the one-time password if someone is attempting to breach your account.
Farewell, Internet Literacy
As the tools used to enact these breaches improve, it feels like the self-preservation of players has been steadily declining. Even as tools for multi-factor authentication get more and more trustworthy, players rely on in-app storage more than ever, allowing these breaches to land on target.
If the Sony and Nintendo data breaches taught us anything, it’s that individual account security needs to become a larger priority both for players themselves and the developers who store our data. Square Enix still doesn’t have a lead on who committed this particular breach, but previous incidents like this have involved individuals and groups alike.
Whether they intend to just sell the data off, hold it for ransom, or to let the breach itself sit as some kind of threat itself, Square Enix will need to step up the plate to regain player trust, especially with a new expansion right around the corner. Now isn’t the time to lose players, right when the MMO winter season is ready to blow in.
