“A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.”
Good old Sheev Palpatine’s immortal words seem rather appropriate today, as it looks like the 1999 PlayStation classic Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace is finally getting trophy support on PS4 and PS5, nearly three years after its re-release. You can find the full list at the bottom of this article.
Brand-new trophy lists have appeared on both PSNProfiles and Exophase, strongly suggesting that Disney is preparing to give trophy hunters another reason to revisit the slightly wonky adventures of Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi and company.
Originally released in 1999, The Phantom Menace returned to modern PlayStation consoles on January 16, 2024, as part of Sony’s growing catalogue of emulated PlayStation classics. The re-release came with a few modern conveniences, including save states and a rewind feature, but one thing was conspicuously absent: trophies.
For reasons known only to the mysterious forces governing the PlayStation universe, not every classic game gets trophy support. Some launch with a shiny Platinum waiting to be earned, while others are seemingly left out in the cold. That’s because Sony does not require trophy support in classic titles, so many publishers simply don’t bother adding them.
Thankfully, some have shown a willingness to revisit older releases and add trophies retrospectively. Games including Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue, Toy Story 3 and Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus have previously received similar treatment.
The newly discovered lists contain 21 trophies each, including a Platinum, eight Gold, ten Silver and two Bronze trophies. Eleven are awarded for completing the game’s various levels, while the remaining nine non-Platinum trophies involve optional objectives, secrets and various bits of mischief, meaning there was some genuine effort put into making this list.
For example, It’s the Jedi Way requires you to complete Otoh Gunga without any casualties, while The People’s Jedi tasks you with saving four people during the Escape from Theed level. There’s even a Gold trophy, It’s Bombastic Fun!, for taking out eight enemies with a single Thermal Detonator.
My personal favourite, however, has to be You Smell of Poodoo, which simply requires you to reek of dung worm. Truly, the sort of heroic achievement that the Jedi Order was founded upon.
Interestingly, Exophase has separate trophy listings for the PS4 and PS5 versions, meaning dedicated trophy hunters should have two Platinum trophies to chase. At the time of writing, the PS4 listing even shows a single player having earned A Desperate Escape, awarded for completing the Trade Federation Ship level.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the update is publicly available just yet, as the trophy could have been earned during testing.
There has not been any official announcement of the update, nor confirmation of when the trophies will become obtainable, but their appearance across multiple tracking websites is a pretty strong indication that something is happening behind the scenes.
It’s certainly a welcome surprise for fans of PlayStation’s Classics catalogue, particularly those who enjoy collecting Platinum trophies from the console’s extensive back catalogue.
