Stefan Thomas, a German-born programmer living in the U.S., made headlines when he forgot the password to a hard drive containing the private keys to 7,002 Bitcoin—worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The drive uses IronKey encryption, which gives users just 10 attempts before it permanently locks the contents.
Thomas wrote down the password years earlier, but lost the paper. After eight failed attempts, he’s left with only two chances to unlock his fortune.
