What Is the Strange Chunk of Amber?

Where is the Actual Blood of Lathander?
When players first get to Créche Y’llek in Baldur’s Gate 3, they are able to find a document that talks about the mysterious Blood of Lathander that could be a powerful weapon for the player. While looking for it, they can find a Strange Chunk of Amber, with a few drops of blood inside of it.
At first glance, this seems like the alleged Blood, but it’s anything but. In fact, players will carry around this amber for a while before realizing they aren’t even using it.
So that begs the question: what is this Strange Chunk of Amber, what does it have to do with the The Blood of Lathander, and what is it even used for?
Thankfully, all of those questions have simple answers.
What Is the Strange Chunk of Amber?
When you first get the chunk of amber, Tav will make a remark about how it’s strange that this is the alleged “blood” that the document was talking about, simply because of the few drops of blood suspended inside.
You can find this amber deep within Créche Y’llek, in the area where you meet Ch’r’ai W’wargaz (and potentially fight him). Specifically, it’s in one of his side rooms.
However, this chunk of amber is simply a decoy to distract players from looking for the actual Blood of Lathander. You can’t sell it or get rid of it by any means other than simply sending it to camp. Otherwise, it simply takes up space in your inventory.
Realistically, the best thing you can do when you come across the amber is to just not pick it up. That is, unless you want someone in your party to pick it up and roll a religion check if you want to hear what they have to say about it.
Other than that, it’s simply a decoy, a distraction — nothing more, nothing less.
Where is the Actual Blood of Lathander?
Before you find the Strange Chunk of Amber, it’s important to do one thing first: before you enter the Créche officially, there’s a small room in the Rosymorn Monastery that is full of stained glass.
You can either choose to solve this puzzle, or simply send Astarion to the back to lock pick the wall (DC 30). Doing this, you’ll find a paper describing the Blood of Lathander, and a crest. Keep this crest if you want to live through the encounter. Right where you get the Strange Chunk of Amber, you’ll notice that there are two different statues, each holding a sun.
Reading the descriptions of each will describe the sun rising and setting, so rotate the statues so that the rising sun is facing east, and the setting sun is facing west (you’ll have to either throw something at the statue or cast a spell/cantrip on it in order to get it to budge).
When this is done, a secret door will reveal itself from the wall, splitting bricks until you have a clear pathway. When you do, follow the path, disarming traps along the way until you reach a grand room where the Blood of Lathander stays suspended.
Use the crest, and you can get the weapon seamlessly. If you don’t have the crest — well, you better hope you can find a way to escape in time before the entire Créche collapses on you, killing everyone instantly.
